What is solar planning?

Everything solar planning in autarc can do, with links to all the guides.

Written by Simon Heuschkel

With autarc solar planning, you design every PV system in one tool: from the first design for your customer through simulation and proposal to the documents for installation. No switching between tools, no entering data twice.

Whatever data you have for a project, autarc has the right planning basis. And everything you design feeds automatically into yield, economics, the proposal and the technical documentation.

Every planning mode you need

autarc supports every common way of capturing a roof. Simply choose the one that suits your project:

  • 3D model from drone photos, photogrammetry included: What usually needs a separate tool or an outside provider is included in every autarc plan. Fly the building with your drone, upload the photos and get a true-to-scale 3D model in about 15 minutes, right in your design. autarc detects the pitch, orientation and dimensions of the roofs automatically, and dormers, chimneys, trees and neighbouring buildings feed into the shading. No second program, no file transfers, no extra cost. Photogrammetry service and Roof survey with a drone.

  • Your own 3D model: Already have a 3D model from other software or a survey provider? Upload it and design directly on it.

  • High-resolution map providers: Start designing straight away, without a site visit. Alongside satellite images, you get true-to-scale orthomaps: in the UK, Bluesky Orthomap at 5 or 12.5 cm resolution, with its own 3D terrain for slopes and facades.

  • Perspective photos: A photo from your customer or a quick drone shot is enough. You calibrate the roof using two known lengths and the panels follow the perspective. Planning on perspective photos

  • Building blueprint: Ideal for new builds. Upload the blueprint, draw a reference line and start designing.

  • By numbers: No drawing at all, e.g. for a quick first design or an existing system you're offering a battery for. Configuring a solar system by numbers

How the interface works and how to design roofs, panels and components is explained in the Solar planning overview.

The right system, fast

  • Panels in seconds: Fill surfaces automatically, with obstructions left clear. Also on facades, fences and carports.

  • Inverters and batteries at the click of a button: autarc rates your catalogue and suggests the best and the cheapest compatible combination, including automatic stringing. Inverter and battery recommendations

  • Strings with live checks: Every string is checked against the inverter's limits as you design it.

  • Mounting system with bill of materials and structural check: Plan the substructure, generate the bill of materials and assess wind and snow loads. Planning the mounting system and bill of materials

  • Realistic shading: Shadows at any time of day, losses per panel and how much yield each object costs. Simulating and analysing shading

Win customers with simulation and proposals

Every design becomes a simulation of the whole energy system with solar, battery, heat pump and EV charger in one click. It shows yield, energy flows and economics hour by hour (How is the PV yield calculated?).

From there you create a proposal and presentation that win your customers over, and share the design in 3D in the customer portal if you like. For MCS-compliant designs, you also create the MCS report straight from the design.

Ready for installation

Once the job is won, you carry straight on: autarc creates the circuit diagram, string plan, panel layout plan, CAD drawing, bill of materials and shade report directly from the design. Your installation team gets everything as one PDF in the autarc Field App. Creating the technical documentation
