Creating the technical documentation

How to create the circuit diagram, string plan, panel layout plan, CAD drawing, bill of materials and shade report from your solar design and pass them to your installation team as a PDF.

Written by Simon Heuschkel

In the technical documentation, you create all installation documents from your solar design: circuit diagram, string plan, panel layout plan, CAD drawing, bill of materials and shade report.

autarc generates each document automatically from the design. You can then adjust and add to it, download it as a PDF on its own, or pass everything to your installation team as one report.

Opening the technical documentation

In the project, open the Survey & Design tab and, in the Solar section, click the Technical Documentation tile. You need a solar design in the project.

Select the document on the left; use the arrows to collapse or expand the navigation. With Open Planning you can jump back to the solar design at any time. All documents stay linked to the design, see the individual sections.

Circuit Diagram

The Circuit Diagram shows the electrical layout of the system. autarc takes panels, inverters and batteries from the project's solar design automatically, with a DC isolator per string. As long as you have not changed the circuit diagram by hand, it follows every change to the design automatically. Once you have made your own changes, autarc no longer updates it on its own but shows a button to update it. Hover over it to see what has changed in the design. One click applies the changes and leaves your own adjustments untouched wherever possible. Use Undo to restore the previous state.

If the design contains strings without panels, autarc asks Import empty strings?: with Leave out they are left out of the circuit diagram, with Import anyway they appear as empty strings. If the string planning is missing or incomplete, autarc warns you, as the circuit diagram may not be accurate then. Plan strings takes you straight to the string planning.

You can adjust every component:

  • Components: Drag further components from the list on the left onto the canvas. They are grouped into Generation, Conversion, Storage, Protection, Metering, Connection, Distribution, Load, Reference and Annotation, e.g. DC Isolator, RCCB, Surge Protection, G99 Relay, Utility Meter, Energy Manager, Heat Pump or Wallbox. Use Search components to find a component faster.

  • Tools: Use Select to move components, Rotate to rotate them and Connect to draw cables. Double-click a component to rename it. Top right, you can undo or redo steps.

  • Text, Line, Circle and Rectangle: for your own notes, e.g. safety notices or instructions for switching the system on and off. A text has an optional Heading, a Border, three sizes and a colour. A line can be Dashed and have an Arrowhead. Resize shapes by dragging a corner.

  • Show legend: shows a legend of the components used.

G99 protection: Select an inverter to record its G99 protection: None, Integrated in inverter, External to inverter, Both integrated and external or Not required (G98 compliant).

Tables in the circuit diagram: Under Tables, use Add table to insert a title block or a data table. There are two templates:

  • Installer details: e.g. Company, Type of installation, Plant performance, Feed-in Phases, Created by and Approved by.

  • Component technical specs: panels and strings, inverters and batteries of the design.

Use Edit table to add or delete rows and columns. Type { to insert a data field that autarc fills in automatically, e.g. Company name, Company address, Object address, Customer name, Today's date or Company logo.

Save recurring set-ups under Templates with Save as a template and use them in other projects with Use template. With Reset to default you start again.

String plan

The Stringplan shows which panels belong to which string, per roof side or all roof sides together on one page. autarc colours the panels in a light shade of the string colour. A legend names each string. Bottom left, a scale that adapts as you zoom shows real lengths. It is also on the PDF, so your installation team can measure the printed plan on site. Top right, you can undo or redo steps.

  • Name and colour: A string's name and colour are kept in sync with the solar design. If you rename a string in the design via ... > Rename or change its colour there, the string plan follows, and vice versa. In the string plan, click a string and change the String name or colour.

  • String rating: For each string, the string plan shows the same values as when you hover over the string in the solar design, e.g. Isc, Voc and Impp at minimum and maximum panel temperature. The rating is also on the PDF and in the full report.

  • Notes and measurements: Use Add text to add notes for the installation team and Add measurement for dimensions. Use Select and move to put them in the right place.

You create the stringing in the solar design. Find out more in String planning.

Panel layout plan

The Panel Layout Plan shows where the panels sit on each roof, one roof at a time or all on one page with All roofs. autarc colours panels without a string as in the CAD view, and panels with a string in a light shade of the string colour.

  • Custom panel colours: Select panels, several by holding Shift as in the solar design, and choose a colour. autarc shows them in a lighter shade of that colour, e.g. to mark construction phases.

  • Notes and measurements: Use Add text for notes and Add measurement for dimensions, e.g. distances to the roof edge. Measurements of the same length snap to each other.

autarc projects tilted panels onto the roof surface. As in the string plan, there is a scale in the editor and on the PDF, and undo and redo top right.

CAD

Under CAD you see the geometry of the design as a technical drawing. As in the panel layout plan, you add measurements and text. They appear on every PDF you export, together with a scale. With Download DXF you open the drawing in your CAD software.

Bill of materials

The Bill of Materials lists all components of the design with Art. no., Quantity, Buying price and Total, grouped into Modules, Inverters, Batteries, DC optimizers and Mounting. The mounting parts come from the mounting system, see Planning the mounting system and bill of materials.

  • Changing quantities: Change a quantity directly in the list.

  • Add product: adds a product from your catalogue.

  • Add custom line: for material that is not in your products, e.g. cables. Custom lines only belong to this bill of materials and never appear in a proposal.

If the design changes afterwards, autarc marks the lines that differ. Use Use planning quantity or Use planning quantities to align them. If the design no longer contains a component you edited, it appears under No longer in the planning. With Keep as custom line it keeps its quantity.

The Procurement total shows the buying value of the whole bill of materials.

Shade report

The Shade Report summarises the shading per array and per object. Find out how to create and read it in Simulating and analysing shading.

Always up to date: If you open the shade report and the design has changed since the last calculation, autarc recalculates the shading automatically, even if the shading simulation is switched off in the design. The same applies to the simulation and the proposal.

Downloading as PDF

Download each document separately with Download PDF, the CAD drawing as DXF.

Creating the full report

With View report you combine the documents into one PDF, the Technical Documentation Report:

  1. Under Included sections, choose what the report should contain: Simulation, Circuit Diagram, Stringplan, Panel Layout Plan, Bill of Materials and Shade Report. You can limit the simulation to individual pages.

  2. Choose a Contact person. They are named on the cover with their email address and phone number.

  3. Check the report under Preview and download it.

The report starts with a cover page showing the property, design and author, followed by a table of contents. The file is named after the design, the customer and the date. If autarc cannot create a section, it is left out of the report and autarc lets you know.

Passing it to the installation team

Your installation team gets the technical documentation as one PDF in the autarc Field App, even offline. To include it:

  1. In the project, open the Pre-Installation tab.

  2. Under Documentation, choose the Technical Documentation step.

  3. On the right under autarc Planning Documents, click Solar technical documentation so that the row is selected. It contains the circuit diagram, string plan, panel layout plan, bill of materials and shade report of one solar design. If the project has several solar designs, choose the right one below it. The most recently edited one is preselected. With Open you jump into the technical documentation to check it first.

  4. Complete the remaining steps and click Send to Installer in the Summary.

autarc creates the report from the current state of the design when you send it (Generating documents...). It is then also saved in the project under Documents as “Solar technical documentation - Project name.pdf”. Your assigned installers are notified automatically. If autarc cannot create the report, it still sends the other documents.

If the row is greyed out with the note Create a solar planning first, the project does not have a solar design yet.

FAQ

Why does my circuit diagram not match the design?

If you have changed the circuit diagram by hand, autarc no longer updates it automatically. Click the update button to apply the changes from the design. Also check that the string planning is complete.

Why is a document empty?

The string plan, panel layout plan and CAD need panels in the design. Open Planning takes you straight there.

Are changes to the bill of materials applied to the proposal?

No. The bill of materials is for procurement. Custom lines never appear in a proposal.
