According to DIN 12831, wall areas are not determined by using either the interior or exterior dimensions, but rather by summing the lengths of the interior walls and adding half the thickness of the adjoining walls. In the simplified procedure, the lengths of the interior walls are used and multiplied by a factor of 1.25 to calculate the relevant wall area.
